Blazium Rijder
A downloadable video game for Windows and Linux
I am making a driving game just for fun.
The car is inspired by the cyan Hotrod car of Tommy in A2 Racer 4 - De Politie Slaat Terug (called Autobahn Raser 3: Die Polizei Schlagt Zurück in Germany).
################ Controls ################
Driving: arrow keys
Hand brake: spacebar
Reposition car: enter (if you are stuck, on your side or upside down)
Put car back at the beginning of the map: h
Open and close the trunk: k
Lock and unlock camera: c
Look backwards: L
Turn music off and on: m
Back to the main menu: escape
While having the camera locked, you can move the camera around with W, A, S and D.
You can rotate the camera to left and right with Q and E.
You can rotate the camera up and down with R and F.
There is no sound for driving, braking or ramming. The only sound in the game is the sound of the trunk opening and closing.
This video game is still in progress. There is also a web build of this game: https://markwiering.nl/blaziumrijder (30th of May version, not the newest 26th of June version!)
Have fun playing! :-D

Both can be heard in
The drawing of Bloom (Winx Club) on the back door of the car is made by the talented artist Taralen and is used with her permission: https://www.deviantart.com/taralen/art/DD-Bloom-646965506
Programs used for making this game:
1. Blazium (game engine, forked from Godot Engine 4)
2. Blender 3.6 (for all the 3D models and animations)
3. Audacity (for chopping up the music and sounds; handy tool)
4. GIMP (for making some of the textures)
5. Geany (for documenting things)

The only limitation if you want to redistribute this is: credit Taralen and Adrian von Ziegler. They deserve the credit. Be nice to them! ;-)
################ Updates ################
18th of May 2025 update: I improved the aerodynamics of the car, by lowering the centre of mass and by setting better values for the suspension, wheel roll influence, mass and brake intensity. The game plays a lot smoother, now.
The car is not jumpy any more, but stable. You can only flip over when making a sharp turn when having high speed.
I also improved the camera rotation. Camera rotation is now relative to the current camera's position, making it more intuitive to control the camera.
When you reposition your car, the roll velocity is set to 0, meaning that if you reset while rotating, you don't rotate any more while the car is reset.
30th of May update: I implemented the ability to turn the music off (and on again) with the key m. I also implemented a back camera with the key L. I improved the collision and centre of mass for the lampposts, meaning that lampposts don't keep rotating right through the ground any more after being rammed. I also gave the lampposts, bench, dustbin, small lampposts and UFO realistic masses.
Additionally, I open-sourced the game, by including the project on itch.io. Anyone can download the project file and make his/her own changes to it. This way, you can use my project as a template for your own project. There is no need to credit me. You can use the project however you like. I believe in UNLIMITED SOFTWARE FREEDOM!!! :-D
The project can be opened in Blazium (where I made it) and in Godot Engine. You can download it from itch.io (blaziumrijder_project.7z), or from my website directly: https://www.markwiering.nl/Archief/blaziumrijder_project.7z
I also included the following files:
1. BlaziumRijder.7z: exported in Blazium 0.5.68 with Compatibility mode.
2. BlaziumRijderZonderSneeuw.7z: exported in Blazium 0.5.68with Compatibility mode, but without snow background. I have noticed that on some older computers, this game does not run because they cannot import the file Sneeuw.hdr, for some reason. This version (although a lot uglier) should work on those computers.
3. BlaziumRijderVooruit.7z: exported in Blazium 0.5.68 with Forward+ mode. This makes the game heavier to run, but it does look better. For some reason, the background is also lighter and more beautiful.
4. GodotRijder.7z: exported in Godot Engine 4.4.1 with Compatibility mode.
5. GodotRijderZonderSneeuw.7z: exported in Godot Engine 4.4.1 in Compatibility mode, but without snow background, because some older computers refuse to import Sneeuw.hdr, for some reason.
6. GodotRijderVooruit.7z: exported in Godot Engine 4.4.1 with Forward+ mode. This makes the game heavier to run, but it does look better. For some reason, the background is also lighter and more beautiful.
Each exported file now also contains the icon of this game, should you want to make a desktop icon for this game. Now you can set the icon image for it! :-D
I exported to both Blazium and Godot Engine for benchmarking reasons. I am going to test very soon which version runs smoother! :-D
Use BlaziumRijderVooruit.7z if you have a new and fast PC.
Use BlaziumRijder.7z if you have an older PC.
Use BlaziumRijderZonderSneeuw.7z if you have an older PC and the option above doesn't work due to Sneeuw.hdr refusing to load.
You can also use the Godot builds. They work the same. :-)
26th of June update: I implemented the escape menu. Now you can adjust the music volume, sound volume, voice volume and brightness in the game, as well as choosing between two visual modes (high contrast and atmospheric).
The escape menu is in Dutch. This game will be trilingual (Dutch, Russian, English), but I will first focus on the Dutch version.
Today, the server that my website is on ( https://www.markwiering.nl/ ) gave a strange error when attempting to upload files, there. This means that the newest version of this game is solely on itch.io. If you take the game files from my website, you will be downloading the older version (the 30th of May update) instead of the newest version (26th of June version).
I included three videos (in Russian, Dutch and English) showcasing the current build of Blazium Rijder. :-D

Install instructions
1. Download the 7z file. If itch.io malfunctions, you can download the game from my website directly: https://www.markwiering.nl/Archief/BlaziumRijder.7z
The other files that you can download directly from my website are:
A. BlaziumRijderVooruit.7z: https://www.markwiering.nl/Archief/BlaziumRijderVooruit.7z
B. BlaziumRijderZonderSneeuw.7z: https://www.markwiering.nl/Archief/BlaziumRijderZonderSneeuw.7z
C. GodotRijder.7z: https://www.markwiering.nl/Archief/GodotRijder.7z
D. GodotRijderVooruit.7z: https://www.markwiering.nl/Archief/GodotRijderVooruit.7z
E. GodotRijderZonderSneeuw.7z: https://www.markwiering.nl/Archief/GodotRijderZonderSneeuw.7z
F. The project itself: https://www.markwiering.nl/Archief/blaziumrijder_project.7z
2. Unpack the 7z file. You can do this using 7-zip, WinRAR or any other compression program.
3. Now, you will have four files: BlaziumRijder.exe, BlaziumRijder.x86_64, BlaziumRijder.pck and controls.txt
If you are on Windows 64-bit, double-click on BlaziumRijder.exe. The game should launch.
If you are on Linux 64-bit, double-click on BlaziumRijder.x86_64. The game should launch. If the game does not launch, open the terminal, go to the folder where BlaziumRijder.x86_64 is located and enter "sudo chmod +x BlaziumRijder.x86_64", followed by "./BlaziumRijder.x86_64". The game should launch, now.
I am yet to make a Windows 32-bit version of this game.
Do not unpack one single file. Unpack everything. If the file "BlaziumRijder.pck" is not unpacked, the game will not work.
If you are on Windows, you can remove "BlaziumRijder.x86_64" after unpacking to save space.
If you are on Linux, you can remove "BlaziumRijder.exe" after unpacking to save space.
If you have any trouble with running the game, let me know through an e-mail to markwiering@gmail.com or write a comment.

that was weird... good luck with you're game dev journey
Thank you for your feedback!
I agree that the driving mechanic can be weird. I am yet to fine-tune the car. Right now, the car is a bit jumpy. It also flips way too easily.

Edit 18th of May: the car is stable, now. I fine-tuned it. The car is not jumpy any more and also doesn't flip over very easily, unless you make a sharp turn at high velocity.
